A good-hearted but stupid moron who enjoys stealing bananas is mistaken for a snitch fleeing from the mafia.
Johnny Stecchino is a comedy film made by and starring Roberto Benigni in dual roles. This is one of several films Benigni has made with co-star and wife Nicoletta Braschi. With a total of 39 billion lire, it was the highest-grossing film of all time in Italy.
This film follows Dante, a funny school bus driver (Benigni) for pupils with Down syndrome who shares a remarkable resemblance to Johnny Stecchino, an Italian mafioso sought for treason and murder by Sicilian mobsters. The storyline of the film begins to unravel when Dante meets Maria, Stecchino’s wife, who begins her scheme to deceive mobsters into killing Dante thinking he is Stecchino. When Maria begins to fall for Dante, it becomes evident that Dante cannot possibly be the cold-blooded killer Johnny Stecchino.
