Umberto Lenzi was an Italian film director, screenwriter, and author who died on October 19, 2017. Lenzi, a lifelong cinema lover, studied at the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia and created his first film in 1958, which went unpublished, before making his professional debut in 1961 with Queen of the Seas. In the 1960s, Lenzi’s films reflected popular trends of the day, which led to his directing multiple spies and sexual thriller films. In the 1970s, he followed suit, creating giallo films, crime films, and the first Italian cannibal film, Man from the Deep River. He continued to make films until the 1990s and then became a novelist, creating a series of murder mysteries.
