Paolo Sorrentino co-wrote and directed the 2013 art drama film The Great Beauty (La grande bellezza). Beginning on August 9, 2012, filming began in Rome. It had its world debut at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival, where it competed for the Palme d’Or. It premiered at the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival, the 2013 Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival (where it won Grand Prix), and the 2013 Reykjavik European Film Festival.
At the 86th Academy Awards, the picture won Best Foreign Language Film, as well as the Golden Globe and BAFTA awards in the same category. It is a co-production between Medusa Film and Indigo Film in Italy and Babe Films in France, with funding from Banca Popolare di Vicenza, Pathé, and France 2 Cinéma. With a €9.2 million production budget, the picture made more than $24 million worldwide.
