A young Parisian woman meets a middle-aged American businessman who insists on their secret relationship being only focused on sex. Bernardo Bertolucci directed the 1972 sensual drama film Last Tango in Paris. Marlon Brando, Maria Schneider, and Jean-Pierre Léaud feature in the picture, which follows a newly bereaved American who initiates an anonymous sexual encounter with a young Parisian lady. On October 14, 1972, the picture premiered at the New York Film Festival and grossed $36 million in its U.S. theatrical release, making it the ninth highest-grossing film of 1973. The film’s brutal depiction of sexual assault and mental suffering sparked widespread outrage and prompted differing levels of official restriction in various places. When the picture was released in the United States, the MPAA granted it an X rating. In 1981, United Artists Classics issued an R-rated edit.
