The castle is a fortress situated in the upper region of Vallis Regia, which was once another name for Barrea.

The walls, the circular tower, and a second atypical scarp tower are all that are left of the original building. The plan contains a number of anomalies because it conforms to the topography; it was likely built by the de Sangro family, as the Catalogus baronum attests; Simone del Sangro, the first count listed, lived between 1140 and 1160.
