Stella Stellina – Star, Little Star

Stella Stellina and the Forgotten Voice Behind Italy’s Beloved Lullaby

Stella Stellina is a nursery rhyme written by Lina Schwarz, an Italian poet and translator, known as “Aunt Lina,” and published in her poetry book “Ancora…e poi basta!”. The rhyme, written in 1920, has been set to music in various versions and has become one of the most famous Italian lullabies. The author collaborated with Il giornalino della Domenica by Vamba and Il Corriere dei piccoli.

She published several collections of lullabies, nursery rhymes, songs, and poems for children, starting in 1904 with Il libro dei bimbi. Many of her works were included anonymously in school anthologies and other educational books for children, such as I Quindici, where her famous nursery rhyme Stella Stellina appears.

Lyrics

Stella stellina
La notte s’avvicina
La fiamma traballa
La mucca è nella stalla
La mucca e il vitello
La pecora e l’agnello
La chioccia e il pulcino
Ognuno ha il suo bambino
Ognuno ha la sua mamma
E tutti fan la nanna
Stella stellina
La notte s’avvicina
La fiamma traballa
La mucca è nella stalla
La mucca e il vitello
La pecora e l’agnello
La chioccia e il pulcino
Ognuno ha il suo bambino
Ognuno ha la sua mamma
E tutti fan la nanna
(E tutti fan la nanna)

Lyrics

Star little star
The night is coming
The flame flickers
The cow is in the barn
The cow and the calf
The sheep and the lamb
The hen and the chick
Everyone has their baby
Everyone has their mother
And everyone goes to sleep

Star little star
The night is coming
The flame flickers
The cow is in the barn
The cow and the calf
The sheep and the lamb
The hen and the chick
Everyone has their baby
Everyone has their mother
And everyone goes to sleep
(And everyone goes to sleep)
