The 1968 Song About a Dancing Gnat That Became a Gold Record in 2023
At the 10th edition of the Zecchino d’Oro in 1968, the song Quarantaquattro gatti (“Forty-Four Cats”) won first prize, while Il valzer del moscerino (“The Gnat’s Waltz”) came in third, just four points behind. However, its performance remained vivid in the memory of many families of the time and in the annals of the Zecchino d’Oro, thanks to the way the little singer pronounced the letter “R” (“il valzer del mocerrrrrrrino”).
That little girl was Cristina D’Avena, who stayed on at the Antoniano as a member of the Piccolo Coro until the age of 12, before going on to a much more famous and celebrated career. The song, written by Laura Zanin (lyrics) and Adriano Della Giustina (music), tells the story of a charming little waltz danced by a gnat on the nose of Beppone, a sleeping man. The waltz, accompanied by the notes of the wind, makes the big man snore, but it ends abruptly when the insect is chased away by a mischievous cat, who scratches Beppone’s big nose.
The song has been covered many times, and Cristina D’Avena herself recorded it again in 2006 as the opening track of an album of the same name, and in 2022 as a duet with Orietta Berti in the album 40 – Il sogno continua.
On television, D’Avena has revived the song on several occasions: in Quaranta Zecchini d’Oro (1997), in Gran galà dello Zecchino d’Oro (2007), and in 60 Zecchini (2017). In 2023, the song was awarded a Gold Record for the number of streams achieved on digital platforms.
