The 1968 Zecchino d’Oro entry that celebrated a bullfighter who preferred gentle pets over aggressive confrontation
“Il Torero Camomillo” (The Bullfighter Chamomile)
This is one of the 12 songs competing in the 10th Zecchino d’Oro, the year when Quarantaquattro gatti won and Il valzer del moscerino also became well-known. The song tells the story of a torero who is a bit too calm, preferring to pet the bull and take a nap rather than fight the animal. The 1968 piece was sung by little Michele Grandolfo.
Lyrics
Olé
Lallara-lallara-lallara-lalla-la
Lallara-lallara-lallara-lalla-la
Lallara-lallara-lallara-lalla-la, olè
Già il toro è nell’arena
Però non c’è il torero
Cos’è questo mistero
Chissà dove sarà
Olé
Lo cercano dovunque
La folla intanto grida
Che vuole la corrida
Che vuole il matador
Olé, olé, olé
Il matador chi è?
Torero Camomillo
Il matador tranquillo
Che dorme appena può
Torero Camomillo
Se il toro ti è vicino
Tu schiacci un pisolino
E non ci pensi più
Lallara-lallara-lallara-lalla-la
Lallara-lallara-lallara-lalla-la
Lallara-lallara-lallara-lalla-la, olè
Ed ecco finalmente
Che scende nell’arena
Non sembra darsi pena
Va con tranquillità
Olé
Avanza lemme lemme
Si piega sui ginocchi
E si stropiccia gli occhi
Il grande matador
Olé, olé, olé
Il matador chi è?
Torero Camomillo
Il matador tranquillo
Che dorme appena può
Torero Camomillo
Se il toro ti è vicino
Tu schiacci un pisolino
E non ci pensi più
Lallara-lallara-lallara-lalla-la
Lallara-lallara-lallara-lalla-la
Lallara-lallara-lallara-lalla-la, olè
La folla va in delirio
Vedendo quel torero
Accarezzare il toro
E poi ci dorme su
Olé
È buono e sottomesso
Quel toro grande e grosso
Che fa da materasso
Al grande matador
Olé, olé, olé
Il matador chi è
Torero Camomillo
Il matador tranquillo
Che dorme appena può
Torero Camomillo
Se il toro ti è vicino
Tu schiacci un pisolino
E non ci pensi più
Torero Camomillo
Se il toro ti è vicino
Tu schiacci un pisolino
E non ci pensi più
Lallara-lallara-lallara-lalla-la
Lallara-lallara-lallara-lalla-la
Lallara-lallara-lallara-lalla-la, olè
Olé
Olé, olé, olé
Olé
Lyrics
Olé
Lallara-lallara-lallara-lalla-la
Lallara-lallara-lallara-lalla-la
Lallara-lallara-lallara-lalla-la, olé
The bull is already in the arena
But the torero isn’t there
What’s this mystery?
Who knows where he could be?
Olé
They search for him everywhere
While the crowd is shouting
They want the corrida
They want the matador
Olé, olé, olé
Who is the matador?
Torero Camomillo
The calm matador
Who sleeps whenever he can
Torero Camomillo
If the bull comes near you
You just take a little nap
And don’t think about it anymore
Lallara-lallara-lallara-lalla-la
Lallara-lallara-lallara-lalla-la
Lallara-lallara-lallara-lalla-la, olé
And finally he descends
Into the arena
He doesn’t seem to worry
He goes with ease
Olé
He walks slowly, slowly
Kneeling down
Rubbing his eyes
The great matador
Olé, olé, olé
Who is the matador?
Torero Camomillo
The calm matador
Who sleeps whenever he can
Torero Camomillo
If the bull comes near you
You just take a little nap
And don’t think about it anymore
Lallara-lallara-lallara-lalla-la
Lallara-lallara-lallara-lalla-la
Lallara-lallara-lallara-lalla-la, olé
The crowd goes wild
Seeing that torero
Petting the bull
And then napping on it
Olé
The big, gentle bull
Is so calm and submissive
That it makes a mattress
For the great matador
Olé, olé, olé
Who is the matador?
Torero Camomillo
The calm matador
Who sleeps whenever he can
Torero Camomillo
If the bull comes near you
You just take a little nap
And don’t think about it anymore
Torero Camomillo
If the bull comes near you
You just take a little nap
And don’t think about it anymore
Lallara-lallara-lallara-lalla-la
Lallara-lallara-lallara-lalla-la
Lallara-lallara-lallara-lalla-la, olé
Olé
Olé, olé, olé
Olé
