“Alla Fiera dell’Est” (At the Eastern Fair) by Angelo Branduardi (1976)

Angelo Branduardi Transforms Ancient Passover Song Into Italian Folk Classic

This musical piece by the Italian singer-songwriter Angelo Branduardi is a reinterpretation, with music composed by Branduardi himself, of the nursery rhyme Chad Gadya, which is traditionally recited by children at the end of the Passover Seder and celebrates the liberation of the Jewish people from slavery in Egypt. The song is included in the eponymous third studio album, recorded in 1976 under Polydor, which won the Italian Music Critics’ Prize in the same year. The musical arrangements followed Angelo Branduardi’s artistic transformation after his meeting with Maurizio Fabrizio, who also oversaw the arrangements for the album.

In 1978 it was released in a French version with the title “A la foire de l’est” and in an English version, entitled “Highdown Fair”, with lyrics by Peter Sinfield. Lyrics of the Italian version were written by Branduardi’s wife, Luisa Zappa. Alla fiera dell’est was used as the main song in the Belgian movie Tori and Lokita where the protagonists sing it repeatedly whenever they feel down.

Lyrics

Lyrics

At the Eastern fair, for two pennies, my father bought a little mouse
At the Eastern fair, for two pennies, my father bought a little mouse
And came the cat, who ate the mouse, that my father bought at the market
And came the cat, who ate the mouse, that my father bought at the market
At the Eastern fair, for two pennies, my father bought a little mouse
And came the dog, who bit the cat, who ate the mouse, that my father bought at the market

At the Eastern fair, for two pennies, my father bought a little mouse
And came the stick, that hit the dog, who bit the cat,
who ate the mouse, that my father bought at the market

At the Eastern fair, for two pennies, my father bought a little mouse
And came the fire, that burned the stick, that hit the dog,
who bit the cat, who ate the mouse, that my father bought at the market

At the Eastern fair, for two pennies, my father bought a little mouse
And came the water, that put out the fire, that burned the stick, that hit the dog,
who bit the cat, who ate the mouse, that my father bought at the market

At the Eastern fair, for two pennies, my father bought a little mouse
And came the bull, who drank the water, that put out the fire, that burned the stick, that hit the dog,
who bit the cat, who ate the mouse, that my father bought at the market

At the Eastern fair, for two pennies, my father bought a little mouse
And came the butcher, who killed the bull, who drank the water,
that put out the fire, that burned the stick, that hit the dog,
who bit the cat, who ate the mouse, that my father bought at the market

At the Eastern fair, for two pennies, my father bought a little mouse
And came the Angel of Death, upon the butcher, who killed the bull, who drank the water,
that put out the fire, that burned the stick, that hit the dog,
who bit the cat, who ate the mouse, that my father bought at the market

At the Eastern fair, for two pennies, my father bought a little mouse
And finally came the Lord, upon the Angel of Death, upon the butcher,
who killed the bull, who drank the water, that put out the fire,
that burned the stick, that hit the dog, who bit the cat,
who ate the mouse, that my father bought at the market

At the Eastern fair, for two pennies, my father bought a little mouse
