A reporter and a retired journalist who is blind strive to investigate a string of killings. The crimes are linked to covert research conducted by a pharmaceutical corporation.

Dario Argento wrote and directed The Cat o’ Nine Tails in 1971, based on a narrative by Dardano Sacchetti, Luigi Cozzi, and an uncredited Bryan Edgar Wallace. Although it is part of Argento’s so-called “Animal Trilogy” (along with The Bird with the Crystal Plumage and Four Flies on Grey Velvet), the titular “cat o’ nine tails” does not refer to a literal cat or a literal multi-tailed whip; rather, it refers to the number of leads that the protagonists pursue in their attempt to solve a murder. Though it was a failure in Europe, it was a success in the United States. In the book Broken Mirrors, Broken Minds: The Dark Dreams of Dario Argento, Argento stated that he was dissatisfied with the picture and has frequently rated it as his least favorite of all of his films.
