Mario Monicelli directed the 1975 Italian comedy-drama film My Friends (Amici miei). The film project belonged to Pietro Germi, who died before it could be completed due to his unexpected death. The film’s opening titles, in fact, paid honor to the author with the words “a film by Pietro Germi,” which was subsequently followed by “directed by Mario Monicelli.” The picture, which debuted at number one in Italy ahead of Steven Spielberg’s Jaws, was followed by two sequels, Amici miei Atto II (1982, again directed by Monicelli) and Amici miei Atto III (1985), directed by Nanni Loy.
