A vacation to the Mediterranean sea becomes a journey into the discovery of how society’s frames of the affluent and poor are fragile and transient.

Swept Away… by an Unusual Destiny in the August Blue Sea (Travolti da un insolito destino nell’azzurro mare d’agosto), sometimes known simply as Swept Away, is a 1974 Italian romantic adventure comedy drama written and directed by Lina Wertmüller and starring Giancarlo Giannini and Mariangela Melato. The film follows a wealthy woman on a yachting holiday with friends in the Mediterranean Sea until she and one of the boat’s crew become separated from the others and stuck on a barren island.

The woman’s capitalist ideals and the man’s communist principles collide, yet their social positions are flipped during their battle to live.

Swept Away was released to mixed but mostly good reviews, and it received the National Board of Review of Motion Pictures Award for Best Foreign Film in 1975.
