Germany, Year Zero (Germania anno zero) is the concluding film of Roberto Rossellini‘s unofficial war film trilogy, which includes Rome, Open City, and Paisà. Germany Year Zero takes place in Allied-occupied Germany, as opposed to the others, which take place in German-occupied Rome and during the Allied invasion of Italy. Rossellini, like many neorealist filmmakers, relied heavily on local, non-professional performers. He shot on-site in Berlin with the intention of conveying the reality of Germany a year after its near-complete destruction in World War II. It offers spectacular visuals of bombed-out Berlin and the human battle for existence in the aftermath of Nazi Germany’s demise.
