Silvana Mangano (April 21, 1930 – December 16, 1989) was an Italian film actress. She was one of a wave of neorealist thespians who went on to become a great female celebrity, considered a sex symbol during the 1950s and 1960s. She received the David di Donatello for Best Actress three times, for The Verona Trial (1963), The Witches (1967), and The Scientific Cardplayer (1973), as well as the Nastro d’Argento thrice.

Mangano was raised in poverty after WWII and studied as a dancer and model before winning the Miss Rome beauty competition in 1946. This led to cinema employment; she found fame in Bitter Rice (1949) and went on to have a great career in films, working with many renowned directors such as Pier Paolo Pasolini, Luchino Visconti, Alberto Lattuada, and Vittorio De Sica. Her career lasted well into her fifties, with appearances in David Lynch’s Dune (1984) and Nikita Mikhalkov’s Dark Eyes (1987). Mangano was the wife of worldwide film producer Dino De Laurentiis, with whom she had four children, including Veronica and Raffaella De Laurentiis.
