Francesco Rosi was an Italian film director who lived from November 15, 1922, to January 10, 2015. At the 1972 Cannes Picture Festival, his film The Mattei Affair received the Palme d’Or. Rosi’s films, particularly those from the 1960s and 1970s, appeared to convey political undertones. While the subjects of his subsequent films grew less political and more literary in nature, he continued to direct until 1997, with his final picture being an adaptation of Primo Levi’s novel, The Truce.

Thirteen of his works were presented in a section allocated for film-makers of exceptional quality and achievement at the 2008 Berlin International Film Festival. He was awarded the Honorary Golden Bear for Lifetime Achievement, and his 1962 picture Salvatore Giuliano was shown.

Francesco Rosi has directed a number of popular films in Italy, including Hands over the City (1963), The Mattei Affair (1972), and Christ Stopped at Eboli (1979).
