Federico Fellini (January 20, 1920 – October 31, 1993) was an Italian cinema director and screenwriter recognized for his particular style, which combined fantasy and ornate imagery with earthiness. He is regarded as one of the most important and influential filmmakers of all time. His films have received high marks in critical surveys such as Cahiers du Cinéma and Sight & Sound, who rank his 1963 picture 8+12 as the 10th best film of all time. Fellini won the Palme d’Or for La Dolce Vita, and he was nominated for twelve Academy Awards, winning four in the category of Best Foreign Language Film, the most for any filmmaker in Academy history. At the 65th Academy Awards in Los Angeles, he got an honorary medal for Lifetime Achievement. La Strada (1954), Nights of Cabiria (1957),  (1963), Juliet of the Spirits (1965), the “Toby Dammit” part of Spirits of the Dead (1968), Fellini Satyricon (1969), Roma (1972), Amarcord (1973), and Fellini’s Casanova (1973) are among his other well-known films (1976). In Sight & Sound’s 2002 list of the best directors of all time, Fellini was voted second in the directors’ poll and seventh in the critics’ poll.
