Erebus, also known as Érebos, “deep darkness, shadow,” or just Erebos, is one of the primordial deities and the embodiment of darkness in Greek mythology.

Hesiod’s Theogony describes him as one of the first five entities in creation, born of Chaos. In Latin, he was referred to as Scotus. The word “Erebus” is occasionally used interchangeably with Tartarus to refer to the area of the Greek underworld where the dead pass right after they die, even though he has no active function as a deity in later works.
