Spes was regarded as the goddess of hope in early Roman religion.
There are several temples dedicated to Spes, and inscriptions show that she was revered both publicly and privately. There was rumored to have been a temple dedicated to “ancient Hope” (Spes vetus) next to the Praenestine Gate during the Republic. Although it was linked to events in the fifth century BC, its validity as anything other than a private shrine has been questioned. Elpis, the Greek equivalent of Spes, had no official worship in Greece in contrast.
