Nerio (or Neriene) was a war goddess and the embodiment of bravery in ancient Roman religion and myth.
She served as Mars’ consort in ancient cult rituals and was occasionally confused with the goddess Bellona and other times with the goddess Minerva. The Romans occasionally offered Nerio spoils acquired from foes. Later, mythologized gods that were adopted and modified from other religions took the place of Nerio. One of the two wives of the battle god Mars, the other being Moles, was Nerio. Her name is a Sabine term that means “power and courage,” according to Aulus Gellius, who wrote about it in his book Attic Nights.
